Today Ukraine celebrates National Flag Day
Day of the State Flag of Ukraine is a state holiday of Ukraine dedicated to one of its state symbols, the Flag of Ukraine. It is celebrated annually on August 23.

Officially, on August 23, 1991, after the failure of the coup in Moscow, a group of people's deputies brought the blue and yellow Ukrainian flag into the session hall of the Verkhovna Rada. The UAOC priest, Petro Boiko, conducted the consecration of the National Flag. The Decree of the President of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, "On the Day of the State Flag of Ukraine" 87 987/2004 is tied to this event; a corresponding picture was painted on the wall of the Verkhovna Rada, and this flag, as a relic, is solemnly kept under glass in the Verkhovna Rada Museum.
However, the participants in those events call a different date for introducing the flag in the session hall. This is confirmed by the transcript of the extraordinary session of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of August 24, 1991.
At the national level, the holiday was established by the decree of the President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma № 987/2004 "On the Day of the State Flag of Ukraine" dated 23.08.2004.
This decree was supplemented by the Decree of the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko № 602/2009 "On Amendments to the Decree of the President of Ukraine of August 23, 2004, No. 987," which established the raising of the Flag of Ukraine on the Day of the State Flag of Ukraine and other national holiday events.
Grand events in Kyiv
This year the ceremonious events will take place on the territory of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War with the participation of Kyiv residents.
In particular, veterans of anti-terrorist and joint forces operations will raise the largest state flag on a flagpole. And 30 young residents of the capital, who are winners of school Olympiads, creative festivals, and sports competitions, will receive passports of Ukrainian citizens in the form of ID cards from the hands of the mayor.
The Day of the State Flag of Ukraine in the capital is held for the first time on the territory of the Memorial Complex "National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War." In 2020, a memorial with the largest flag was unveiled there. In addition, the Ukrainian flag on the Pechersk hills can be seen from many city spots.
The ceremony of raising the State Flag of Ukraine will take place with the participation of the Kyiv mayor and the all-military platoon of the Honor Guard company.
This year, on the Day of the Flag of Ukraine, Kyiv will host the Crimean Platform, which will be attended by 45 countries. This is a diplomatic initiative of Ukraine, its main goal is to return international attention to the issue of Crimea, protection of human rights in the occupied territories, and de-occupation of the peninsula.
The city will also hold a cultural and public event, "Ritual Towel," dedicated to the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Ukraine's independence; they will show films "Stronger than weapons," "Mykhailo Hrushevskyi" in the cinemas of "Kyivkinofilm."
Also, flowers will be laid on the occasion of the Day of the State Flag of Ukraine in different districts of Kyiv to the monuments of the defenders of Ukraine.
