Capture the cuteness: Rubryka's photo correspondent's six-year collection to celebrate International Cat Day
Today, August 8, marks International Cat Day. The International Fund for Animal Welfare created it in 2002 to celebrate the special role that cats play in people's lives and raise awareness about their protection.
Mykola Tymchenko, the photo correspondent for Rubryka, has been capturing images of cats on the streets of Ukrainian cities for six years. So, in honor of Cat Day, Rubryka decided to showcase his handpicked photos to its readers.
"I take many photographs on the streets, and naturally, cats, who are important members of city life, often make their way into my shots. This collection showcases images from five to six years ago, highlighting both stray and domestic cats, usually peering curiously from their homes.
Six years is a significant amount of time. In the photo, you can also see animals that suffered during the war – Kharkiv, Irpin, and Bucha cats. There were also Kherson cats. I recall sailing on a boat with the military during the flooding of Kherson and how they tried to catch a few scared cats while boats carrying rescued individuals sailed toward them. This caused a dispute among the soldiers as everyone was focused on saving people, but we could not catch the cats. However, every life was valuable to us. During those times, we managed to save a few cats," Mykola Tymchenko recounts.
