Rebuilding Ukraine: Tuzlivska school breaks ground on first Ukrainian shelter funded by UNITED24 donations

The Tuzlivka school's shelter was the first in Ukraine to receive equipment through donations on the UNITED24 fundraising platform. Almost one million hryvnias were raised, with the most significant contribution of 850 thousand hryvnias coming from a renowned tennis player and platform ambassador.

The Ministry of Education and Science's press service reports this.

What is the problem?

Modern shelters in schools are not only a wartime necessity but also an example of creating a safe environment for students.

Full-time education allows students to overcome educational losses and socialize more effectively.

What is the solution?

A brand new shelter has been set up at Tuzlivka school in the Odesa region, with almost 1 million hryvnias collected through the UNITED24 platform. This generous amount was thanks to tennis player and UNITED24 ambassador Elina Svitolina, along with major donor AVT Bavaria, that contributed 850 thousand hryvnias, the largest sum.

Moving forward, over 200 students from 6 villages in the community will have access to a secure environment to support their academic progress.

How does it work?

It took us nine months to put together and outfit the shelter. This is an instance of us making an operational choice to achieve a significant outcome.

"In total, UNITED24 and the Office of Partnerships and Interaction of the Ministry of Education and Science have attracted more than UAH 456 million to rebuild four schools and equip 12 shelters. The first of them is a new shelter at the Tuzlivska School, which is already operational.

We are grateful that our partners, donors, and the UNITED24 team support the vector of returning to offline, which has chosen education as one of its areas of activity," Yevhen Kudriavets, First Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine said.

The shelter's opening at Tuzlivka School was part of Yevhen Kudriavets' working visit to the Odesa region.

The main focus was on the security conditions in which students study.

This year, the state allocated UAH 7.5 billion from the state budget to construct underground schools.

70 underground schools are actively being built in priority frontline and border regions. Communities and schools can attract funds from the state and donors to construct safe educational spaces. To do this, they can create a profile in the DREAM ecosystem, submit their projects, and follow announcements of financial support opportunities. More details are at the link.

One is the Odesa region, which received more than 500 million Ukrainian hryvnias. Ukraine's First Deputy Minister of Education and Science also visited the Bilhorod-Dnistrovska community. During the visit, emphasis was placed on assessing the condition of protective structures, the progress of building underground schools, and the upgrading of food service facilities, all funded by the state budget.

During the visit, the prospects for improving the material and technical base of schools and the challenges faced by educators and teaching staff of the community, particularly regarding the implementation of the high school reform and the formation of a capable network, were also discussed. The priority of the Ministry of Education and Science is regular communication with the regions for the effective implementation of educational reforms and the restoration of access to full-time, safe education, especially in frontline and border areas.

For reference:

UNITED24 is a fundraising platform and the foremost opportunity for foreigners to donate to support Ukraine. Over the 30 months of operation of the UNITED24 fundraising platform, citizens from over 110 countries have raised over $748,000,000.

As has been reported, the roof of the main building at Slavutych City Hospital in the Kyiv region is currently under reconstruction. The implementation of this project is set to rely on the fundraising platform "UNITED24". The project's total cost is estimated to be over 16.3 million UAH.

In Mykolaiv, amidst the ongoing full-scale Russian war against Ukraine, a new kindergarten has been opened to provide safe shelter for young children. This allows almost 200 children to resume their educational activities.
