Ukraine drives towards energy independence with rising natural gas production
Ukraine is steadily boosting its natural gas production, showcasing its sustainability efforts and pursuit of energy independence.
The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine reported that.
"The presence of a sufficient amount of self-produced blue fuel increases the possibilities for a stable passage of the heating period. In addition, increasing domestic gas production is a key factor in reducing Ukraine's dependence on world markets. Moreover, Ukraine has a real prospect of becoming the gas hub of Eastern Europe," Deputy Minister Mykola Kolisnyk said.
He believes these opportunities have been made possible through:
- equipment modernization,
- new technologies,
- and increased protection of gas production facilities.
Working with international energy companies has allowed for the integration of new technologies, and Ukraine must focus on developing new subsoil areas to further expand its resource base.
The government of Ukraine systematically supports and responds to the industry's needs by implementing new legislative initiatives to support the gas production industry, improve work efficiency, and stimulate investments.
"Since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, the gas industry has faced numerous challenges, including the shutdown of many fields in the east of the country due to hostilities. However, the war not only created difficult conditions for mining but also stimulated important reforms and investments to improve the country's energy security," the deputy minister noted.
For reference:
According to the executive director of the Association of Gas Production Companies, Artem Petrenko, Ukraine's gross gas production in the first half of 2024 reached 9.4 billion cubic meters. It is expected to double by the end of the year and potentially surpass last year's production of 18.7 billion cubic meters by 100-200 million cubic meters.
