Ukrainian gymnast Illia Kovtun claims silver in parallel bars at 2024 Olympics
Ukrainian gymnast Illia Kovtun won a silver medal in the parallel bars competition at the 2024 Olympics.

Illia Kovtun was the opener for the final and received a commendable score of 15,500 points. However, he could not top the Chinese contestant Zou Jingyuan, who dominated with an unbeatable score of 16,200 points.
Kovtun received a total of 7,000 points for the exercise's difficulty and 8,500 points for the execution. On the other hand, Jingyuan fell slightly behind with a difficulty score of 6.900 but more than made up for it with an impressive performance, earning 9.300 points. The Japanese contestant Shinnosuke Oka secured third place with a total of 15,300 points.
20-year-old Kovtun is participating in his second Olympic Games. At his first Games in Tokyo, he placed 11th in the individual all-around and 7th in the team event.
The Ukrainian athlete Oleh Verniaev competed in fifth place and scored 13,300. Unfortunately, he made a mistake during his routine and fell off the bars, causing him to finish in eighth place. However, in the 2016 Olympics, he was victorious in this event, winning the gold medal and also placing second in the all-around.
In the final, the other countries' performances were as follows:
- Zhang Boheng (China) scored 15.100,
- Ferhat Arikan (Türkiye) also scored 15.100,
- Wataru Tanigawa (Japan) scored 14.133,
- andZou Jingyuan (China) scored 16.200, ultimately winning the gold medal;
- Lucas Dauser (Germany) received a score of 13.700
- and Oke Shinnosuke (Japan) earned a bronze medal with a score of 15.300.
