Supporting heroes: American University Kyiv offers scholarships to Ukrainian veterans, widows, widowers and children of fallen soldiers

The Scholarship Fund at the American University of Kyiv (AUK), founded in 2023 by AUK president Dan Rice, is still running and supporting veterans, widows/widowers, and children of fallen Ukrainian heroes. The fund's partners include the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the Ukrainian Veterans Fund under the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine, with financial assistance from American private and corporate donors.

Rubryka reports this.

What is the problem?

"As a veteran of the American army, I know well that quality education helps to get a good profession, opportunities, and a team of like-minded people – and, therefore, a better life. I am sure that each of the fallen heroes who had children and who, for their future, protected and defended the independence of Ukraine dreamed of a good education and career for them. I am convinced that new skills, a new community, and positive challenges are what will motivate Ukrainian veterans, widows, and widowers of fallen heroes, despite all the tragedy of today's war, to continue living and realizing their potential for the benefit of Ukraine. Thank you to the partners and donors for supporting the Fund and the wide opportunities for our heroes and their family members," Dan Rice, the president of AUK, said.

What is the solution?

In 2024, AUK will show deep respect and honor to the Ukrainian military and members of their families by inviting Ukrainian veterans, widows/widowers, and children of fallen (deceased) heroes to take advantage of the Foundation's "Honor" program. This program provides scholarships covering 99% of the cost of studying at AUK for a chosen bachelor's or master's program.

How does it work?

The Ukrainian Veterans' Fund of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs and the American University of Kyiv signed a Memorandum of Cooperation last summer. In the fall, four scholarship recipients began their studies at AUK.

"Scholarship training for veterans and their families is a great opportunity to get a new qualification and self-realization in the field that has always been attractive but has been unavailable for various reasons. From my own experience, after a person has received combat experience, training itself can help switch over to return to civilian life. It's like an opportunity to start all over again," Yuliia Kirillova, head of the Ukrainian Veterans Fund, urges.

Some of the individuals and organizations that have generously contributed to the AUK scholarship fund include J.P. Morgan Infrastructure Fund, Summit Utilities, AEVEX, Aerovironment, Point72, Third Coast, Logistics Plus, Liberty Tools, Mr. Tim Tyson, Mr. William Murdy, Dr. Karen Kula McClone, General David Petraeus, AUK President Daniel Rice, and other donors.

The deadline to submit scholarship applications is August 21, 2024.
