Embassy of Ireland opens in Ukraine

For the first time in the history of bilateral relations, the Irish Embassy opened in Kyiv. Prior to that, the Irish Ambassador in Prague worked part-time in Ukraine.

On June 7, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Vasyl Bodnar received copies of his diplomatic credentials from the Ambassador of Ireland with residence in Ukraine Teresa Gili, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reports.

Bodnar noted that launching the Irish Embassy in Kyiv would help intensify the Ukrainian-Irish dialogue.

"The appointment of the Ambassador of Ireland to Ukraine with residence in Kyiv will help revive political contacts, increase trade, strengthen cooperation between our citizens. We hope for positive changes shortly in simplifying the procedure for obtaining Irish visas for Ukrainian citizens," Bodnar said.

The parties also discussed preparations for the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense of Ireland Simon Coveney to Ukraine this year.

A separate topic of the meeting was the preparation of the inaugural summit of the Crimean platform.

Ireland recognized Ukraine on December 31, 1991, and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on April 1, 1992.

Honorary consulates have been operating in Ukraine and Ireland since 2000. The Ambassador of Ireland in Prague was a part-time ambassador to Ukraine.
