Corruption won’t cut it: what to do when someone demands a bribe from you

On December 9, the world celebrates International Anti-Corruption Day. Rubryka decided to analyze what everyone needs to know to fight and what to do if teachers, managers, officials, doctors, police, or anyone else demands a bribe from you.

Not just a phenomenon, but a complex crime

Corruption is varied. You may be asked for money for a good grade, a new position, failure to report for speeding, proper treatment, and more. You're not responsible for other people's actions, but you must remember that offering, promising, or giving a bribe is as illegal as taking it. This is determined by Article 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and provides for a fine of 8,500 to 12,750 hryvnias or restriction or imprisonment for two to four years.

If someone tries to involve you in a corruption crime, it is better to refuse immediately. Better yet, hold the perpetrators accountable. If an official is caught taking a bribe, they will be tried under Article 368 of the Criminal Code, which can result in a fine of 17,000 to 25,500 hryvnias, restriction or imprisonment of two to four years, deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or activities for up to three years.
