British Rock, Paper, Scissors film on war in Ukraine secures BAFTA’s Best Short Film Award

The British Academy of Television and Film Arts (BAFTA) held its 78th awards ceremony. The short film "Rock, Paper, Scissors," about the war in Ukraine, won the Best British Short Film nomination.

The list of winners was published on the BAFTA website.

Actor David Tennant hosted this year's British Oscar ceremony at London's Royal Festival Hall.

The thriller "Conclave" was named the best film of the year.

The film tells the story of a congress of cardinals in the Vatican, who, after the sudden death of the Pope, must elect a new pontiff. The film, directed by Edward Berger and starring Ralph Fiennes, won a total of four awards, including:

  • Best Editing,
  • Best Adapted Screenplay,
  • Best British Film.

The same number of awards were awarded to Brady Corbett's film "The Brutalist." The film about a Jewish architect who rebuilds his life in the United States after the Holocaust was awarded for:

  • Best Director,
  • Best Actor (Adrien Brody),
  • Original Score,
  • Cinematography.

Actress Mikey Madison won in the "Best Actress" category for her role as an exotic dancer who falls in love with the son of a Russian oligarch in Sean Baker's film Anora.

The best foreign language film was awarded to the musical "Emilia Perez" by Jacques Audiard.

Zoë Saldaña ("Emilia Perez") won the best supporting actress award.

In the similar "male" category, Kieran Culkin won the award for his work in the film "True Pain." The film also won the award for best original screenplay.

The best documentary was "Superman: The Christopher Reeve Story".

This year, the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Contribution to Cinema was presented to actor Warwick Davis.

Ukrainian actor Oleksandr Rudynsky played the leading role in the film. The film also starred Ukrainian actors:

  • Serhii Kalantay,
  • Yurii Radionov,
  • Oleksandr Yatsenko.

The film is dedicated to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The film was shot based on actual events that took place in Ukraine in February 2022.

The main character is 18-year-old Ivan. His father is a surgeon who, from the first days of the Russian invasion, begins operating on wounded soldiers and civilians in a bunker. The Russian occupiers find out about this.

To protect his family and the wounded, Ivan takes up arms.

The BAFTA Television Award is an annual award presented by the British Academy of Television and Film Arts since 1955 for outstanding achievements in television. It is considered one of the three most important awards in the film industry.

It is called the television Oscar and an analog of the American Emmy Award.

The awards are presented in dozens of categories, including for broadcasts of:

  • live events,
  • series and documentaries,
  • sports events,
  • journalistic materials, etc.

At the end of November, the premiere of the spy series The Agency took place on the Paramount+ streaming service. One of the key roles – Ukrainian military Oleksandr Butenko – was played by actor Oleksandr Rudynsky, known for his work in Ukrainian cinema.

Also, Ukrainian actor Oleksandr Rudynsky of the Ivan Franko Theater, who became the only actor from Eastern Europe, played the role of the Eyeless Bandit in the Netflix series Decameron, based on Giovanni Boccaccio's collection of short stories.
