US Army engineers will help transform Ukraine’s State Transport Special Service

The United States Army Corps of Engineers will help transform Ukraine's State Special Transportation Service.

According to the agency, a meeting was recently held in Washington between the Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine for European Integration, Oleksandr Balanutsa, and the head of the Administration of the State Special Transport Service (SSTS), Brigadier General Oleksandr Yakovets, with a delegation of the US Army Corps of Engineers, led by the commander of the North Atlantic Division, Brigadier General John Lloyd.

During the meeting, the parties discussed directions for further strategic partnership between SSTS and the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Attention was focused, in particular, on challenges in the construction of fortifications, demining, and protection of critical infrastructure facilities.

How does it work?

"The experience of the US Army Corps of Engineers will help transform the State Transport Special Service. Applying the practices and organizational models of American engineers will help increase the efficiency of the SSTS's work. We are ready to use the experience of our partners for the rapid development of our services," Balanutsa said.

Training became a separate topic, namely the training of Ukrainian specialists in the fields of design, construction, and control. Specific agreements were also reached on this issue.

"The long-standing practice of the US Corps of Engineers in carrying out tasks related to demining the area, construction, and reconstruction of infrastructure facilities, in particular special purpose, will make it possible to quickly adapt to today's challenges caused by the full-scale invasion of Russia, and to acquire the capabilities to implement plans for the recovery of our country," Yakovets commented.

The parties also checked the state of implementation of current projects with American colleagues' support and outlined plans for further development.

"The partnership between our two organizations is mutually beneficial for both countries, and we look forward to continuing the dialogue. We hope to meet again in person soon to further define our long-term goals and vision," Lloyd said.

The US Army Corps of Engineers is known for its strategic construction and reconstruction projects, including:

• post-war European reconstruction projects (Marshall Plan),
• reconstruction of Iraq,
• post-war reconstruction of Bosnia and Herzegovina,
• numerous infrastructure projects in South Korea.
