UNESCO to assist in restoration of Lviv monuments damaged in recent Russian rocket attack

UNESCO is looking to help rebuild the buildings – historical landmarks destroyed by a Russian missile on July 6.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy wrote that on Facebook.

As reported, the Lviv City Council is negotiating with a specialized agency of the United Nations.

"Negotiations with UNESCO are ongoing now. They will help rebuild houses that belong to the historical heritage," wrote Sadovy.

The Head of the City also noted that 600 wooden windows for historic buildings have already been ordered and are in the process of being made for the residences damaged by rocket fire.

In addition, the owners of apartments that do not belong to the historical heritage are already replacing the windows, and the American Foundation also helps them.

The head of Lviv also noted that the residents of the four most destroyed buildings on Stryyska Street receive compensation for housing rent from the city. It will be paid until their houses are rebuilt.

It should be noted that earlier, Sadovy criticized UNESCO for its reaction to the Russian shelling of the city on the night of July 6, during which the buffer zone of the World Heritage site was damaged.

"Yesterday, UNESCO condemned the rocket attacks on the historic center of Lviv. They dared not even name the terrorist country that carried out these attacks. Moreover, Russia remains a member of the organization's executive committee," wrote the mayor of Lviv.

On the night of July 6, the occupiers hit Lviv with rockets: a critical infrastructure object was damaged, and a missile hit a high-rise building.

The invaders fired 10 Kalibr missiles, of which the Ukrainian military managed to shoot down 7.

In Lviv, in memory of the victims of the Russian missile attack, the city authorities announced a two-day mourning period. Among the killed was the family of Volodymyr Sadovy, a Lviv journalist from the Varta media.

On July 7, Mayor Andriy Sadovy announced that search and rescue operations were being completed in Lviv, and the number of people killed due to a Russian rocket hitting a residential building had increased to ten. Also, 48 residents were injured of varying degrees of severity.

It should be noted that the UN Specialized Agency for Education, Science, and Culture (UNESCO) declared that it was "deeply concerned" by the Russian missile attack on Odesa and condemned it.
