EU countries agreed to new russian sanctions and more military aid to Ukraine

The foreign ministers of the EU member states agreed to prepare new anti-russian sanctions and increase arms supplies to Ukraine

The EU's chief diplomat Josep Borrell announced this, cited by Reuters.

The heads of European foreign ministries took such a decision in response to russia's announcement of mobilization.

The top diplomat of the EU emphasized that the address of the russian president vladimir putin, in which he announced mobilization and threatened nuclear weapons, showed panic and despair.

"It's clear that Putin is trying to destroy Ukraine," Borrell stressed.

The chief diplomat confirmed that the ministers of all 27 EU countries agreed to prepare the eighth sanctions package. It will be directed against "more relevant sectors of the Russian economy and continue targeting people responsible for the war of aggression in Ukraine."

EU ministers will hold their next official meeting in mid-October when this sanctions package can be approved.

Borrell also declined to provide details on the type of sanctions or military support. However, he said that, in his opinion, there would be "unanimous" support for the new measures in the bloc.

President Volodymyr Zelensky replied that Ukraine does not plan to cancel the liberation of the occupied territories, even despite putin's nuclear threats.
