The EU intends to recognize a special legal regime for Ukrainian electricity

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) intends to recognize a special legal regime for Ukrainian electricity.

Deputy Minister of Economy, Trade Representative of Ukraine Taras Kachka wrote this on Facebook.

"The first victory of climate diplomacy. CBAM recognizes Ukraine's special legal regime," he wrote.

"The CBAM draft regulation published today notes in paragraph 47 of the preamble the special legal regime of the countries that are parties to the association agreements, containing a deep and comprehensive free trade agreement. There are three such countries, Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia," the trade representative added.

Kachka also noted that an exception applied only to electricity.

"Metallurgy, fertilizers, and cement continue to qualify for CBAM," the trade envoy said, adding that advocating work should continue.

"So in Ukraine, there are industrial and energy facilities that can scare everyone with their emissions. But obviously, we're not so bad. And Ukrainian society, politicians, and businesses seek climate-friendly modernization. And I'm sure we'll be climate-neutral by 2050. Together with the EU," he stressed.
