Sheremet’s case: examination of “Belarusian recordings” begins

Ukrainian experts are examining the published audio recordings of alleged conversations between the KGB leadership in Belarus as part of the investigation into the case of contractors who ordered the murder of journalist Pavel Sheremet.

Hromadske Radio reports referring to Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Anton Herashchenko.

According to Gerashchenko, the examination of voices is conducted in Ukraine by Ukrainian specialists in a phonoscopic examination. "For example, if a person cannot be interrogated in person, they'll take a public speech and compare it with the recording. In this case, this is the way to go. Examinations take time. It's a difficult technical and expert work," Deputy Minister said.

According to him, since the crime was committed on the territory of Ukraine, the investigation should be conducted by Ukraine, and other countries can only assist in the investigation within the framework of international legal assistance.

"In the case of Belarus, I doubt that it will facilitate this investigation. Although it would be good to interrogate the person who's present on the tapes after he's identified. But I have significant doubts that they will allow us to do so. The same story with the witnesses. The country can refuse to interrogate witnesses and there are no options to force the country to do so," Herashchenko said.

Earlier, the media reported that back in 2012, the secret services of Belarus on the orders of Lukashenko discussed the possibility of blowing up Pavel Sheremet with an explosive, which was carried out in 2016.
