March in Ukraine: a glimpse through Rubryka’s lens

Rubryka presents a curated selection of powerful photographs capturing life in Ukraine in March. Ukrainians often say that due to the ongoing Russian war, every month feels like an endless February—fierce and unyielding. As they bid farewell to their bravest and endure air strikes that devastate cities and lives, they persist in seeking victory. Yet, spring is undeniably present, blooming in every flower and reflected in each smile. Just as spring overcomes winter, Ukraine will prevail over this extended February.

  • A farewell ceremony was held at St. Michael's Cathedral and Independence Square in Kyiv for Ukrainian soldier Vasyl Ratushny, the elder brother of prominent Kyiv activist Roman Ratushny. Family, friends, and loved ones gathered to honor his memory. Vasyl, 28, was killed in a Russian drone strike in February. His mother, Ukrainian writer, poet, and journalist Svitlana Povaliaieva has tragically lost both of her sons to Russia's war. Her youngest son, Roman, was killed on June 9, 2022, near Izium.
  • Amidst ceasefire negotiations between American, Russian, and Ukrainian parties, Ukrainians are emphasizing the necessity for any deals to include the return of prisoners of war.
  • The Come Back Alive charity foundation is delivering military equipment to the frontlines. A heartfelt thanks to all who donate and support Ukraine!
  • On the night of March 19, Russian forces launched an attack on Kyiv with 45 drones, lasting nearly six hours. In Bucha district, debris damaged 20 townhouses, 15 private homes, and 19 vehicles, injuring two people. Immediately after the attack, residents started rebuilding their homes. Rubryka photojournalist captured the aftermath of the airstrike in Hostomel, Busha district.

In Kyiv, on March 16, an event was held near the Shevchenko National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater to commemorate the third anniversary of the Russian airstrike on the Mariupol Drama Theater, where civilians had taken shelter. Hundreds, including children, perished in the attack. Participants laid out the inscription "CHILDREN" (which also can be read as "WHERE ARE YOU" in Ukrainian)in white letters and lit blue and yellow lamps in front of the theater.
