Salaries in Ukraine, Crimea, and ORDLO: who will win?
Salaries in Ukraine are 15% higher than in Crimea and 2.3 times higher than in ORDLO, but it hasn't always been the case for the last 7 years. We analyze how salaries, prices, and pensions have changed.
One of the most common arguments in favor of changing the status of Crimea and in support of separatist movements in the eastern regions of Ukraine in 2014 was dissatisfaction with the current socio-economic situation. People wanted higher salaries and pensions and lower prices for goods and services. According to many, it was Russia that could ensure the prosperity of Crimea and Donbas, unlike Ukraine, which was in a deep economic crisis. But did the expectations of the population of Crimea and ORDLO, which have been living separately from the rest of Ukraine for more than 7 years, come true?
To answer this question, we decided to compare prices for basic consumer goods, pensions, and salaries in Ukraine, Crimea, and in the territory of ORDLO for 2015 – 2021. These indicators were translated into the dollar equivalent, which was determined according to the official exchange rate from the NBU/CBR on January 1 of a certain year. All information obtained on the size of average prices, salaries, or pensions was taken from publicly available sources, such as publications of the State Statistics Committee, Rosstat, or similar institutions in the so-called "DNR" and "LNR."
