On February 26, 2014, thousands of people under Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar flags went on a protest in the center of Simferopol, Ukraine. On the same square, they were opposed by supporters of the Russian Unity Party, led by the current "head of the Republic of Crimea," Serhii Aksionov.
The protest ended in a fight, several people died in the stampede, but it seemed that supporters of Ukraine won: Aksionov's people were ousted, and the vote in the Verkhovna Rada which was going to remove Viktor Yanukovych's protege Anatolii Makeiev and set a date for a "referendum" failed.
It seemed like a victory then. Until Vladimir Putin's "green men" appeared in the Crimea at night, and the war began in Ukraine, which continues to this day. Whether the conflict can end in the coming years, what Ukraine's position is, and what we should prepare for, read further in the new Rubryka article.
