Two years without Katia. When will Handziuk's murder contractors be punished?
The case of the attack on Kateryna Handziuk has been going on for over two years. The last hearing was yesterday. We're explaining what became known and what new case circumstances are
On July 31, 2018, an activist from Kherson, Kateryna Handziuk, was attacked. She was splashed with sulfuric acid. Exactly 2 years ago, on November 4, she died of her burns in the hospital. Today is the anniversary of her death, and Rubryka talks about the events that took place over the past year.
Who has already been convicted?
All five perpetrators received between 3 and 6.5 years in prison. Among them was Serhii Torbin, the group's coordinator, who was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison in June 2019. Direct attacker Mykyta Hrabchuk was imprisoned for 6 years. Volodymyr Vasianovych, who drove Vyshnevskyi, and Viacheslav Vyshnevskyi, who tracked down Kateryna Handziuk, were sentenced to 4 years in prison each. Viktor Horbunov, who bought acid, was imprisoned for 3 years. Another participant in the case, Ihor Pavlovskyi, was convicted of concealing a crime. The deceased activist's father Viktor Handziuk called the result of the trial a performance:
"From three to six years. For murder. With special cruelty. With the task of special torment given. Committed by a group of people by prior arrangement. According to the order. For money. It hurts. It's disgusting, and it's a shame to Katia's cherished memory. I'm ashamed for the state… In exchange for some information and a guilty plea, they change the charges and reduce prison time. It is also in prosecutors' interests not to collect evidence. The crime is solved, the case is brought to court, the degree of social tension is reducing. The court hearing will end, and it benefits the court," Viktor Handziuk commented on Facebook.
