What are the territorial defense forces doing to defend the country?
In early 2022, the law "On the Fundamentals of National Resistance" came into force in Ukraine. According to it, the Territorial Defense Forces must be formed. These are brigades that will protect the state border in case of a threat, protect critical infrastructure, fight sabotage and reconnaissance groups, and so on.
Almost 45% of Ukrainians believe that the threat of a new invasion of Russian troops in the winter and spring of 2022 is real, while 44% believe that there will be no attack soon. The residents of the Central region are most concerned about the possible Russian invasion, and the residents of the East are the least concerned. And according to a survey conducted by the Ukrainian Institute of the Future in January 2022, 56% of Ukrainians are ready to join the territorial defense if it is created in their community.
What is the problem?
Territorial Defense is a system of national resistance that, together with the Armed Forces, must deter the encroachment of any aggressor. Until recently, its staff consisted of several hundred militaries. Their difference from the main composition of the Armed Forces is that in case the territorial defense forces don't take part in combat clashes with the enemy, their tasks are outside the areas of hostilities.
