On September 23, 2020, Rubryka has spoken English. Since then, we've been telling the world about hundreds of solutions from Ukraine.
Today, the English-language version of the website of the first Ukrainian solutions media, Rubryka, is one year old. Exactly a year ago, we decided Rubryka should speak English, and since then we've been telling about solutions, news, and stories from Ukraine in English every day.
Rubryka is the first Ukrainian media, purposefully developing solution journalism in Ukraine. We're talking not only about problems but also about proper ways to solve them, cases that are already working. Rubryka analyzes each such case to show that change begins with each of us. We believe that if we pay attention to what has already been done, what problems are already being solved, it will give impetus to further positive developments. Solution journalism allows us not only to inspire and motivate, prompt to action but also to provide the knowledge on how to resort to this action. That is what makes it so valuable and necessary.
Every day, our editors choose only the key news about what's happening in Ukraine, as well as about the solutions created by Ukrainians, changing our country and the world, for the English-language feed. A translation of a long read prepared by our journalists also appears daily in the English-language Rubryka.
"I value the English-language Rubryka the most because we can show the most interesting cases of solutions from Ukraine to the entire world. Thus, we've translated pieces about the dog-therapist Kimiko from Kherson, inclusive cafes in Ukraine, Valentin Frechka's incredible invention, paper from fallen leaves," Maryna Smahina, the publication's copy editor comments. "It's very cool that Rubryka as a media solution not only promotes this approach to journalism in Ukraine, not only encourages the introduction of constructivism in our media field but also allows Ukrainian solution stories to be heard. After all, we need to talk about good deeds and how they work. That's how there'll be more of them."
Besides translations of case stories from Ukraine, translations of excerpts from the rest of our articles appear daily in the English-language Rubryka. Each of the articles published in Rubryka can start to speak English: you can donate here and specify what piece you'd like to see in English. Translation won't be delayed!
"Clearly, solution journalism is an effective and necessary tool for real social and personal change. With each case covered in Rubryka, we want to push readers to action, inspire them to small actions, and thus move Ukrainian society to transformation. And choosing content for the English-language Rubryka, we want to show the world that Ukraine is not only about problems, war, corruption, etc., but about solutions and innovations that can change not only the lives of Ukrainians but perhaps residents of other countries, for the better. Our country is populated by #SolutionCreators, and the awareness of this fact inspires me," said Oleksandra Voronina, the editor of the English-language version of the Rubryka.
Since April 2020, Rubryka has also launched English-language pages on social media, Facebook and Twitter, so that current events in Ukraine and the solutions of Ukrainians can be read in English anywhere in the world. Rubryka – Solutions from Ukraine means only the most important news from Ukraine, the best Ukrainian solutions, and the most interesting facts about our country for everyone who'd like to learn more about Ukraine but doesn't speak Ukrainian.
