Hollywood technologies in a smartphone: how Ukrainians created a viral application, overtaking TikTok and Netflix

The co-founder of the company that developed the app which broke world records for downloads, talked about how technology for Hollywood production has become a product, and shared tips with young startups

A new word, pivot, emerged in English business slang. Literally, it translates as a swing or turn, but now it has turned from a noun into a verb. Pivot your business means to change the direction of your project radically without changing its core technology. You change your focus from what was the key thing in the product to what was secondary. But it can be more useful and enjoyable for users.

In his medium column, a tech investor and co-founder of a tech startup Dima Shvets described how face swap technology developed for Hollywood companies made a pivot. As a result, a mobile face swap app Reface emerged now breaking all records for downloads in the AppStore and Google Play. World celebrities used it, including Elon Musk and Snoop Dogg, and recently the app became the most popular application in 18 countries of the world. It was downloaded over 50 million times, and in popularity it overtook TikTok and Netflix. How did the Ukrainian developers make the way before beating the charts?
