How Kyiv solves the problem of overfull landfills, and what every Kyiv resident can do to save the city's environment
Kyiv generates 1,300,000 tons of garbage annually. Less than 8% of the waste is sorted and recycled in the capital. Residential sectors' garbage is taken to the Energia incinerator, the Grinko-Center garbage sorting station, landfills, and dumps in the Kyiv region. However, most of the waste is buried outside the city, in the village of Pidhirtsi, at the so-called special solid waste landfill №5 violating all modern environmental standards. It's a picturesque forest area that turned into a landfill 34 years ago. Now it's an actual environmental bomb for inhabitants and the major river of the country.
This year, Kyivspetstrans enterprise promises to start developing project documentation for further reclaiming the second map at the landfill № 5. Immediately after this message, the news spread that the landfill was being closed, presented as good news, a sensation. It should've looked like caring for the environment. However, everything is not so easy in reality. Unsuccessful or illiterate actions can lead to terrible consequences for Kyiv and region residents.
