In Ukraine, about 5,000 people need transplants every year. Last year, over 3,000 patients died because of the incapacity to perform vital operations. The reason was mostly in imperfect legislation. But the ice has melted. At the end of last year, the law on transplantation was amended, and in the spring, they launched the register of donors and patients in a test mode. We talk about what it changes and why these transformations affect everyone.
No one knows when and what kind of medical care they may need. Transplantology seems to be something distant and ephemeral, as long as there is no need to get this topic.
Fortunately for many Ukrainians, this area is now beginning to change for the better.
In April of this year, they launched a new register in Ukraine, the Unified State Information System for Organ and Tissue Transplantation. 25 medical institutions across Ukraine have received licenses and become Transplant Centers. Medical facilities have been funded to perform about a hundred transplants this year. The journalists of Rubryka analyzed how this project works and how successful the changes to the transplantation law were.
