2020 Olympics: what will Tokyo surprise with? 22 solutions
Medals, made from mobile phones, a Ukrainian judge, and condoms for participants. On June 23, International Olympic Day, we'll talk about what makes the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo special.
Last year, humanity faced a pandemic, and the world forgot about the Olympics. And in September 2020, IOC Vice President John Coates said: in 2021, the Olympics in Tokyo will be held regardless of the coronavirus situation. This resolute intention was repeatedly questioned, as COVID-19 was not going to retreat. And so in early June, although Japan was still having the fourth wave of coronavirus, and there was a state of emergency in 10 districts of the country, President of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Seiko Hashimoto finally revealed one hundred percent confidence: XXXII Summer Olympics will happen!
"Armageddon isn't the frontier to focus on while preparing for the Olympics"
The residents of Japan don't share the optimism of the organizers; according to opinion polls, from 50 to 80% of the population opposes the competition, the Japanese fear the Olympics will only worsen the situation with the coronavirus. This fear is understandable: during the entire pandemic in Japan, 723 thousand cases of infection and more than 12 thousand deaths were registered. For the same reason, about 10,000 of the 80,000 volunteers refused to do their job during the Tokyo Olympics.
