We explain how scammers hack accounts in social media, what it's fraught with and how to react if you become a witness or a victim of such actions
Not so long ago, a message appeared on the website of the Cyberpolice about scammers who hacked the pages of social media users and asked their friends to transfer funds. The fraudsters were caught, but only after they managed to collect about half a million hryvnias from gullible people.
Five local residents hacked the citizens' social media pages in two ways: by brute force passwords (Brute Force attacks) and bypassing two-factor authentication: they bought numbers from mobile operators that were checked for verification in social media. If the numbers were linked to social networks, the attackers used the password recovery function via SMS. After gaining access to the accounts of the victims, they sent messages to their friends with a request to borrow money.
Each of us could've taken the place of the deceived users, and it's unknown how many more cybercriminals will use this method. Therefore, it's so important to be warned about such situations and know how to act correctly.
