Benefits of fallen leaves: gardener explains what to do with them

We asked a professional how to dispose of leaves, how to speed up the compost digestion, and why it is important not to use chemicals in wood processing

Why burning leaves is harmful

First, the law forbids burning leaves. In the spring of 2020, illegal burning of stubble and leaves led to large-scale fires, including in the Chernobyl zone. Therefore, the Verkhovna Rada increased the fine amount from UAH 3060 to UAH 6120. The norm is regulated by Art. 77-1 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Violation.

Second, burning leaves is very harmful to human health. When burned, they release heavy metals and benzpyrene gas, which causes cancer, and carbon monoxide, which causes a rapid heartbeat.

The third reason is failing to control such fires. The fire can spread to the house or provoke forest fires. The Chernobyl zone suffered from this in the spring, and now the Luhansk region suffers. The smoke from the fires reached the Kharkiv region's residents.
