November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The United Nations introduced it to raise public awareness of systemic violence against women around the world in 1999. The truth is that the situation has not changed radically since then.
Millions of women around the world still suffer from violence and abuse, and often we cannot assess the scale of the problem, because violence against women is often hidden and taboo. Women themselves can keep silent about violence, which is a symptom of deeper problems in our society.
On November 25, the "16 Days Against Violence" begin around the world: besides the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, December 1 is World AIDS Day, December 2 is International Day for the Abolition of Slavery and December 3 is International Day of People with Disability, December 6 is the Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre, December 10 is the International Human Rights Day.
