PRC v. Chinese Republic: why Taiwan has become a flashpoint (yet again in 70 years)

"+1 to the UN", such an initiative was recently offered by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. He offered to add Taiwan (however, so far only to "participation in the work"). Yes, the island republic is a military ally of the States, sending delegations to the EU. But it has no spot in the UN, the same as Transnistria is unrecognized by the world.
Why do the United States and China quarrel over Taiwan (and we rarely mention it)? Will they fight for the island, as the Western media wrote? And what should we learn from Taiwanese? We talk about the conflict that has been going on since 1949, why it is relevant today, how the world is trying to resolve it, and what Ukraine has to do with it.
