Instagram scandal: child pornography or "engaging content." How to keep kids safe on social media

How far young bloggers can go for the hype and why it's worth checking what your child is doing on social networks

A new scandal erupted in social media related to videos and photos that appear on the social media pages of 8-year-old Milana Makhanets and a 13-year-old boy from Ukraine. Content with photos and videos containing clearly sexual overtones, where children hug, kiss, and, tied up, spend a day together, without leaving each other, angered viewers after the materials were published in the media: now the girl's mother, Daria Makhanets, is accused by viewers of creating content for pedophiles, wanting to make money on it and depriving the girl of her ordinary childhood.

However, the proof that the problem was not far-fetched was the reaction of the children's ombudsperson in Ukraine, who promptly responded to the situation and turned to law enforcement agencies. On his Facebook, Nikolai Kuleba said that he had already turned to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Prosecutor General's Office, the cyber police, and social services to establish the facts and respond accordingly. He also added:
