Timeline: day 194 of Ukraine’s defense against russia’s aggression

Today is September 5. russia's military attack on Ukraine has been going on for 194 days. We're reporting on the current news. The article will be updated.

What about today?

Key points

All of Ukraine follows the official reports of Ukraine's General Staff. Over the past week, 2,750 ruscist soldiers were eliminated. It is the third time with such a result. There were more only in the first two weeks of the invasion.

There are also outstanding results in destroying enemy equipment. As many as 97 units of artillery systems alone were destroyed—this is a record!

The Ukrainian Armed Forces struck the locations of the russian forces' personnel and weapons depots:

  • Bashtanka District, Mykolaiv Region—ammunition depot.
  • Kakhovka District, Kherson Region—ammunition depot.
  • Beryslav District, Kherson Region—ammunition depot.
  • There was also a hit on the Antonivka Bridge area.
  • Tomyna Balka—ammunition depot.
  • Chornobayvka—to be specified.

Total: 4 ammunition depots. We believe in the Ukrainian forces and the victory of Ukraine!

The South operational command reports that during the past 24 hours, the Ukrainian troops  in the southern direction destroyed:

  • 104 ruscists;
  • Six tanks;
  • 26 armored vehicles and motor vehicles;
  • 9 Msta-S and Msta-B howitzers;
  • Eleron-10 unmanned reconnaissance drone.
  • A pontoon crossing near the village of Lvove and two checkpoints in the Mykolaiv and Beryslav districts were destroyed.

Units of the Ukrainian army successfully repelled the enemy offensive in the Bakhmut direction.

It's Antonivka bridge now. It doesn't look like one that you can somehow move along.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine are advancing in several directions in the western part of the Kherson region. They have secured the territory beyond the Siverskyi Donets River in the Donetsk region. ISW analysts announced this. They predict that the counteroffensive's pace will likely change dramatically daily as Ukrainian forces attempt to strip the russians of logistics and destroy their command posts and control. At the same time, they warned that sometimes the occupiers would counterattack in an attempt to regain a part of the lost positions, conducting powerful artillery and air attacks.

russia has fired about 3,500 missiles over Ukraine since February 24. The Ministry of Ecology reports that rocket strikes caused damage not only to infrastructure and residential buildings but also to the environment. Emissions into the atmosphere, soil and water pollution, and the death of flora and fauna accompany rocket explosions. Also, about 200,000 square km of Ukraine's territory requires demining.

Humanitarian missions

The Association of Families of Azovstal Defenders requests to sign a petition on the creation of a special monitoring commission. Per the  Geneva Convention provisions, which are the basis of current international humanitarian law, all persons who are part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are combatants. In case of capture, they have all the rights of prisoners of war. That includes the service members of the Azov regiment that defended Mariupol in the status of combatants based on belonging to a separate military unit of the National Guard of Ukraine. russia, as a state that holds prisoners of war, grossly violates the norms of international humanitarian law and international obligations that were taken by ratifying the Geneva Conventions.

Nuclear facilities

Ukraine has not received the International Atomic Energy Agency's nuclear engineering report based on the mission's visit to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Ukrainian authorities do not have accurate data on the wholeness of safety circuits and the situation with reactor cooling at the ZNPP, Mykhailo Podoliak, adviser to the head of the President's Office, said. "We did not see this in the report. At the ZNPP, the activity of the IAEA's peacekeeping mission is appropriate, as a nuclear, engineering, and nuclear audit," said Podoliak.

russia's defense ministry announced that it had allowed more than 60 foreign journalists into the territory of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. At the same time, the russian side claims that "specially trained Ukrainian and Western journalists" were traveling with the IAEA experts from the Ukrainian side, who allegedly intended to announce the return of the NPP to Ukrainian control.

The IAEA mission itself has already left the ZNPP. Two of its representatives remained at the station permanently. Inspectors of the IAEA mission also plan to reveal their position based on the results of their visit to the Zaporizhzhia NPP on September 6, russian media reports.

Who's coming to Ukraine?

On financial and information aid, weapons, and politicians

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, at a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday, suggested ways in which Germany could supply Kyiv with Leopard 2 tanks, the German news agency DPA reported.

Sky News writes that the UK is significantly expanding the training program for the Ukrainian military. Around 4,700 troops have already been trained at military bases in Britain, and commanders intend to continue to provide this support. The duration of the combat course has been extended from 3 to 5 weeks. This will allow for more advanced training in, for example, trench and urban warfare, vehicle operations, and simulated combat training.

With the financial support of the Japanese government, FAO will provide seven regions of Ukraine with 30,000 tons of winter wheat seeds. Odesa, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Sumy regions participate in the program. In these regions, 1.5 thousand farmers will be identified, each receiving 2 tons of seeds in a 50 kg container.

News from partners

Today, Great Britain will elect a new prime minister and leader of the Conservative Party. Voting results will be announced at 2:30 p.m. Kyiv time. It will become known who will succeed Boris Johnson: the head of the Foreign Affairs Office Liz Truss or ex-Secretary of Finance Rishi Sunak. They both made considerable efforts to support Ukraine during a full-scale war.

Life considering hostilities

In Australia, the artist painted a mural of Ukrainian and russian soldiers hugging. This image immediately caused outrage among representatives of the Ukrainian community. It seems that the author of the scandalous mural still learned his lesson—he apologized and painted over his work. The artist explained that he wanted to add "the human factor to both warring parties." But the invaders have nothing human; unfortunately, this still has to be explained to the world.

The Ministry of Defense continues to troll the russians. The department proposed an alternative to the word "Russophobia." It is suggested to call this process not russo-phobia but russo-go-homia.
