What about today?

Key points

The guerrilla movement is playing an increasingly prominent role in this war, the New York Times writes. Guerrilla activity is increasing because the resistance fighters are in a familiar environment. Identification of targets, undermining of railway tracks, and elimination of collaborators is an incomplete list of the activities of the Ukrainian underground.

Рух

Not all partisan movements take radical action. "Yellow Ribbon" pastes leaflets and paints graffiti on the occupied territories. With all its efforts, the Ukrainian underground shows the occupiers that russians will never be safe.

The Ukrainian forces are also working. Estimated enemy losses as of August 22, citing the data of Ukraine's General Staff, is 200 russian invaders.

The Prosecutor General's office reported scary numbers: 373 children died due to russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Another 723 were injured. The occupiers will be responsible for every destroyed or broken child's life, and they will be brought to justice.

The main points of Ukraine's General Staff's report as of this morning:

  • In the area of the village of Blahodatne in the Mykolaiv region, the occupiers have partial success.
  • The Armed Forces of Ukraine repulsed the enemy's offensive in the Sloviansk, Avdiivka, and Zaporizhzhia directions and the areas of Vershyna–Kodema and Hladosove–Kodema settlements.
  • Currently, military operations are ongoing toward Spirne–Vesele, Streapivka–Soledar, Pokrovske–Bakhmut, Travneve–Kodema, Semyhiria–Zaitseve, and Hladosove–Kurdiumivka in the Donetsk region.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) emphasizes the following facts:

  • russian troops made several unsuccessful attempts to attack south of Izium.
  • russian forces conducted local ground operations southeast of Siversk and northeast and south of Bakhmut.
  • The occupying forces managed to achieve limited success west of Donetsk, but at the same time, attempts to advance southwest of the city were unsuccessful.
  • The russian offensive to the west of Avdiivka continues.
  • russian troops conducted several attacks in the southern operational zone and partially advanced to the east of Mykolaiv.

On the eve of Ukraine's Independence Day, the russian administration has stepped up measures to filter and kidnap people in the occupied territories.

Nuclear facilities

During the telephone conversation, Biden, Macron, Johnson, and Scholz discussed the need to avoid military action at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and the importance of organizing the IAEA visit as soon as possible, the White House said.

Ukraine's talks with russia

russia does not want to negotiate peace and expects a long conflict with Ukraine. Therefore, we shouldn't necessarily count on a meeting between putin and President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Financial Times reports.

The Czechs announced a flash mob for the anniversary of the events of 1968 when the Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia to transfer 1,968 crowns to the Ukrainian forces.

Starting next year, the US will produce a record amount of oil, US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said in an interview for Fox News. "This is all about supply and demand. When russia invaded Ukraine, that [event] pulled millions of barrels off of the global market. Since oil is traded globally, we have to make up for that lost amount of fuel," Granholm said. According to her, by 2023, the US will produce 12.7 million barrels of oil per day (currently, production is 12 million barrels per day).

Sanctions on the aggressor!

The Turkish authorities have promised not to allow any russian person or organization to circumvent the sanctions imposed on russia. At the beginning of August, the Financial Times, citing six officials, wrote that the Western authorities' discontent was growing due to the rapprochement between Turkey and russia. The sources said that the West is ready to retaliate if Ankara helps Moscow circumvent the restrictions.

In Germany, representatives of the CDU/CSU bloc, currently in opposition to the ruling coalition, advocated the suspension of the Schengen visas being issued to russians, Bild reports.

The Swedish government also spoke on the subject of Schengen visas for russians. According to the Minister of Migration Anders Ygeman, they want to see restrictions, but not a complete cessation of issuing visas to russian citizens. "I think that a complete shutdown would be difficult to implement.

On the other hand, a strict restriction, for example by canceling the simplified visa procedure, is what we, Estonia, Finland, and others want from the EU," he said.
