Timeline: day 166 of Ukraine's defense against russia's aggression
Today is August 8. russia's military attack on Ukraine has been going on for 165 days. We're reporting on the current news. The article will be updated.
What about today?
Key points
It was a great start to a new week: at night, the Armed Forces of Ukraine targeted the strategically important Antonivka bridge in the Kherson region again. Along with it, they struck six points in the Kherson region at once, hitting the occupiers in Skadovsk, Chornobaivka, Oleshky, and Nova Kakhovka. HIMARS also hit the positions of the occupiers in Melitopol.
In total, Ukraine's Armed Forces destroyed 21 ammunition warehouses, 17 military bases, two checkpoints, one headquarters, and one oil depot of the occupiers in one week.
The situation in Donbas remains complicated. The Ukrainian army is doing everything possible to stop the russian terror and inflict the most substantial losses possible on the occupiers. Avdiivka, Pisky, Maryinka, Bakhmut, and other flash points in the Donetsk region take the primary efforts and, unfortunately, many lives. It is also tricky in the Kharkiv region and the south of our country, where the occupiers try to concentrate their forces.
"The key thing now, as before, is weapons for our defense, weapons from partners. Every day and without any pauses, we work to increase the supply of weapons to send more powerful and long-range systems to the front," Zelensky said in his daily address.
The key points from Ukraine's General Staff's morning summary:
- The second day in a row, offensive attempts continued in the Verkhnokamianske area near Siversk. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are on the defensive.
- The Ukrainian troops neutralized an enemy reconnaissance group in the Bakhmut area. There were also attempts to storm Bakhmut and its neighboring villages—Yakovlivka, Vershyna, and Zaitseve. They were unsuccessful, the General Staff reports.
- During the offensive on Pisky, Avdiivka, and Nevelske, the enemy had no success and retreated.
- In the Kharkiv axis, the enemy launched airstrikes near Husarivka and Verkhniy Saltiv. They actively conducted operational-tactical UAV aerial reconnaissance.
- In the Novopavlivka and Zaporizhzhia directions, the russian forces carried out offensive actions in the Maryinka and Shevchenkove directions. Ukrainian soldiers met the invaders with precise fire and pushed them back.
In the south, Ukraine's Air Force struck the invaders in the Kherson region three times. Ukrainian defenders have destroyed 24 russian soldiers and six pieces of equipment over the past day.
Since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, the Eastern Air Command's forces have destroyed more than 200 enemy air targets. For instance, in five months, one of the Dnipro anti-aircraft missile brigade units shot down 22 cruise missiles over the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions.
In the temporarily occupied territories of the south, russia is spreading fakes about mass shelling by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The South operational command warns that enemy propaganda continues to throw out shams and sow panic among the population. The occupiers say that the Ukrainian forces plan to massively shell the settlements that will be liberated from the occupation until their destruction. The enemy is trying to turn the local population against Ukraine's defense forces.
russian terrorists have already stated that they are ready to "honorably carry out the most difficult order" if there is one and are prepared for the consequences, "there will be scorched earth here." They openly say they mined the entire Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
Today is the Day of Ukraine's signal corps. On the shoulders of military communications lie the responsibilities of establishing communication channels and timely transmission of information to locations. The success of military operations largely depends on the effectiveness of communications troops. Congratulations! Together to victory!
