The head of the United States, Donald Trump, said that he expects to have a "very good" meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasizing that he respects him and has a "great understanding" with him. The US president also hopes to achieve a sustainable ceasefire in the Russian war against Ukraine very quickly.

According to Ukrinform, he stated this during a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Meeting with Zelensky

"I think we will have a perfect meeting tomorrow morning. We will get along very well," the US president said.

Donald Trump noted that he respects the Ukrainian leader and has a "great understanding".

"He [Zelensky – ed.] will be here tomorrow morning and will sign a historic agreement that will make the United States a major partner in the development of Ukraine's minerals and rare earth metals, as well as oil and gas," the American leader emphasized.

At the same time, he expressed his expectation that the signing of the agreement would benefit the Ukrainian nation.

"I think it will be great for Ukraine. We will be there, and we will dig – we will dig, dig, and dig," Trump said.

He also emphasized that the United States has paid much more than any other country for assistance to Ukraine, "and most of this support has been allocated in the form of military assistance with the best weapons in the world."

According to the White House's chief, the agreement will return the money spent by American taxpayers.

In addition, Trump expressed confidence that the minerals agreement will create the basis for a more stable relationship between the United States and Ukraine, and therefore "will stimulate long-term prosperity that will help the Ukrainians rebuild their country."

Also, during a press conference, Donald Trump said that he hopes to achieve a sustainable ceasefire in Russia's war against Ukraine very quickly. This would lay the foundation for a long-term peace agreement and return stability to Eastern Europe.

"A lot of the things that we do are based on common sense. If you want peace, you have to talk to both sides," he said.

Therefore, according to the US president, "the next step that we will take will be to achieve a ceasefire." In this regard, he expressed hope that "it can happen quickly" and the deaths of thousands of people in the war will stop.

"This will lay the foundation for a long-term peace agreement that will bring stability back to Eastern Europe and hopefully ensure that such a terrible war never happens again on European soil or anywhere else," Trump said.

He said he had told the British prime minister about the US efforts to end the war. According to the White House, these included:

  • talks with the parties to the conflict,
  • talks with G7 leaders,
  • French President Macron's visit to Washington on Monday,
  • and a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky scheduled for Friday.

Trump also said he had "historic" phone calls with Russian leader Putin, which he called "very successful." The US president said efforts to end the war had "made significant progress," expressing confidence that "everything is moving along quite quickly."

It should be noted that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with US President Donald Trump in Washington on Thursday. The issue of Ukraine was one of the main topics on the agenda of the talks.

As reported, US President Donald Trump pretended not to have called Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky a dictator.
