Russian ballistic missile strike on Kyiv sparks fires, resulting in injuries and one fatality

In the early hours of February 12, Russian forces launched a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, igniting fires across several districts of the capital and resulting in multiple injuries and one fatality. 

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine, Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, and Mykola Kalashnik, head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, reported this.

At 4:27 a.m., an air raid alarm sounded across the capital, and within minutes, residents heard loud explosions. Military officials later confirmed the presence of a ballistic missile threat.

The Kyiv City Military Administration announced active engagement by air defense forces in the capital, while the Kyiv Regional Military Administration similarly reported on air defense operations throughout the region.

Initially, the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said that debris hits and fires were recorded in the Holosiivskyi and Podilskyi districts due to the enemy attack.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko reported that emergency services were dispatched to the city's Solomianskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Holosiivskyi, and Podilskyi districts.

Simultaneously, Tymur Tkachenko reported that fires had broken out on the rooftops of residential buildings in the Solomianskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts.

At 5 a.m., the mayor reported fires in the Holosiivskyi, Podilskyi, and Sviatoshynskyi districts.

"In the Obolonskyi district, a fire rages within the industrial zone, and preliminary reports indicate damage to nearby buildings. All emergency services are en route to the scene. Meanwhile, in the Sviatoshynskyi district, a fire has erupted on the roof of a nine-story building. No medical assistance has been requested so far," he noted.

At 5:22 a.m., authorities reported the first fatality resulting from the strike.

"One person was confirmed dead in the Obolon district. Meanwhile, a fire broke out at a private enterprise in the Darnytskyi district," Klychko said.

In the Obolonskyi district, another individual was injured and hospitalized. Later, Mayor Klychko reported that the number of wounded rose to two, including a 9-year-old girl who was also taken to the hospital.

As of 6 a.m., the number of victims increased again.

"Currently, there is one confirmed fatality in the Obolon district. Additionally, there are three injured individuals: two have been hospitalized, while one received medical assistance at the scene," Klychko wrote at 06:04 a.m.

The State Emergency Service reported a fire in an office building in the Obolonskyi district, with flames spreading from the 7th to the 1st floor. As of 6:15 a.m., the fire had been extinguished. Another office building was destroyed in the incident.

It is currently known that rescuers are eliminating the consequences of the attack in the Obolonskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Holosiivskyi districts. In particular:

  • In the Obolonskyi district, two office buildings were destroyed, with one of them catching fire. The fire has been extinguished. The incident resulted in one death and one injury.
  • In the Sviatoshynskyi district, a fire broke out on the roof of a high-rise building. The fire has since been extinguished.
  • A two-story warehouse building in the Holosiivskyi district caught fire. Efforts to extinguish the fire are currently underway.

"More than 80 rescuers and 17 units of fire and rescue equipment are currently working at the scene," the State Emergency Service emphasized.

Emergency services also reported that four residents were injured in the Obolonskyi district as a result of the strike, including a child.
