The "Recovery Window" media network turns one: 120 partners and millions of readers
On January 22, 2025, the "Recovery Window" media network marks one year since its launch. This network unites media outlets, non-media organizations, and analytical centers dedicated to reporting on the recovery of Ukraine's affected regions
Over the past year, regional and national media within the network have shared stories and challenges of rebuilding lives, businesses, territories, and institutions. They explored where funds are being allocated and the reasons for reconstruction delays. The network expanded the scope of recovery narratives and promoted constructive messaging, emphasizing that recovery is not just about rebuilding.
What has "Recovery Window" achieved in a year?
In its first year, the "Recovery Window" network grew from seven founding organizations to 120 partners united by the shared mission of rebuilding Ukraine. Together with its partners, the network published 842 recovery-focused materials in 2024. These reports, stories, analyses, investigations, and explainers reached 24 million readers through social media, websites, and other platforms.
The network, in collaboration with international donors, aims to support recovery efforts and strengthen media work, including both national and regional outlets. Over the year, "Recovery Window" awarded 92 sub-grants to editorial teams for content creation and, in collaboration with journalists on a freelance basis, published over 150 articles on its own and partner platforms.
In 2024, the Recovery Window Media Network organized several events advocating for recovery, including the Recovery Media Conference held on March 15, 2024, in Kyiv. The event brought together network partners, providing an opportunity to ask questions to government representatives, media, and NGOs working on recovery topics. This year, on March 21, the Recovery Media Conference will take place again. Stay tuned for updates on registration and the conference themes on the network's communication platforms.
In June 2024, the "Recovery Window" organized the first Ukraine Recovery Talks ahead of the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2024 in Berlin. Together with partners, they emphasized to international colleagues the importance of supporting the work and strengthening the community, editorial teams, and staff of Ukrainian media.
In August-September 2024, the media network launched the training course "Recovery Watchdogs" for "Recovery Window" participants. Over 1.5 months, partners explored elements of investigative journalism, learned how to communicate about recovery, and delved into details to identify critical aspects.
One of the services created by the media network during its first year of operation is an expert database. It contains the contacts of dozens of specialists in various recovery-related fields, such as analytics, architecture, communications, international aid, and more. This database also serves as a tool for interaction and knowledge exchange between media professionals and non-media organizations within the network.
Rubryka – a part of "Recovery Window"
The solutions media outlet "Rubryka" is a co-founder of the "Recovery Window" media network. The Rubryka team is proud to be part of such a large and dedicated community. Over the past year, we have been actively working on developing recovery instructions, such as how to document damage from shelling using a phone, insure property against war-related risks, or attract international aid for infrastructure rebuilding.
In addition, we have shared stories of Ukrainians who are already transforming the country today, such as the work of the rehabilitation program "Horses and Heroes," the "Hives" project that reformed education in Mykolaiv during the war, and the initiative to restore old wells in Sumy for community needs. You can read these and other articles in our dedicated section via the link.
The materials created in collaboration with the "Recovery Window" media network demonstrate that Ukraine's recovery continues even during wartime.
