Ukrainian cyber experts strike Russian bank in successful intelligence operation

The cyber experts from Ukraine's intelligence agency successfully breached the systems of Gazprombank, one of the largest banks in Russia.

RBC-Ukraine reports this, referring to its sources in the special services.

As noted, Gazprombank is among the three largest banks in Russia. As a result of the large-scale cyberattack on the institution:

  • hundreds of thousands of Russians could not make money transfers and online payments;
  • the work of bank terminals throughout Russia was blocked. For example, in public transport in Tomsk and Voronezh, fare payment terminals stopped working;
  • the Gazprombank website stopped opening in France and Germany;
  • the bank's mobile application did not work.

As is known, the institution's clients are about 3 million individuals, as well as about 45 thousand legal entities.

The source also recalled that the United States Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions against Gazprombank on November 21, 2024.

For reference:

Recently, Ukraine's intelligence carried out a large-scale cyberattack on Russian Internet services. Cyber experts specifically targeted the Russian financial sector, with the attack lasting a week. Major Russian banks were affected by the attack. Additionally, Ukrainian intelligence targeted Russian providers, national payment systems, social media platforms, messaging services, government websites, and many other services.

In addition, problems with ATM operations were observed in Russia due to a large-scale cyberattack by Ukraine's intelligence services.

Additionally, cyber professionals from Ukraine's Ministry of Defense's Main Intelligence Directorate and the BO Team hacker group have successfully disabled equipment belonging to the Vega provider in the Chelyabinsk region. The Russian company responsible for developing nuclear weapons was left without internet and communication services.

In addition, in August, intel cyber experts hacked Russian television and showed a video about the war in Ukraine.
