Ukrainian drones strike Russian ships in Caspian Sea for the first time – Ukraine's intelligence
Ukrainian intelligence confirmed an attack this morning on Kaspiysk, located in the Russian Republic of Dagestan. This "innovative special operation" damaged the Russian flotilla in the Caspian Sea, which is approximately 1,500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
OBOZ.UA reports this by referring to the sources in the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
According to intelligence reports, potential damage could be inflicted upon:
- two missile carriers named "Tatarstan" and "Dagestan";
- as well as multiple smaller project 21631 missile ships.
Earlier, the Center for Combating Disinformation stated that drones in the Russian Caspian Sea attacked the port.
Earlier this morning, a video surfaced on social media showing a drone flying over Kaspiysk. However, the footage captured the drone seemingly exploding, potentially due to interference from air defense systems.
The head of the Republic of Dagestan, Sergey Melikov, noted, one drone was shot down over the region. He also urged to remain calm and not post photos on social networks that "could help the enemy."
"Currently, the circumstances of what happened are being clarified. The operational headquarters is working, and I am in constant contact with the responsible authorities," he wrote.
However, it was revealed through social media that the Russian air defense took down at least one drone, while another is believed to have landed in the port's territory.
After the news of the drone's downing, residents of Kaspiysk shared updates of new explosions on social media.
It is worth noting that Kaspiysk, located along the coast of the Caspian Sea, is a satellite city of Makhachkala and is in close proximity to an international airport. The city has a population of approximately 100,000 people.
Moreover, Kaspiysk houses the naval headquarters of the Russian Caspian Flotilla, where the 414th Separate Marine Guard Battalion and the 46th Separate Coastal Missile Division of the Marines are located.
For reference:
It is important to mention that on August 22nd, the port of Kavkaz in the Krasnodar region of Russia was struck. Subsequently, Russia announced that the damaged ferry had sunk.
The strike caused further logistical problems for Russia in supplying its occupation forces in southern Ukraine and transporting liquefied petroleum gas.
Also, on August 3, in the temporarily occupied Crimea, the Defense Forces of Ukraine struck an enemy submarine and anti-aircraft missile complex S-400.
In addition, satellite images of the consequences of the attack on the port in Novorossiysk, Russian Federation, on May 17 appeared.
In addition, the Ukrainian Defense Forces confirmed an attack on the occupied Sevastopol in the early morning hours of September 13, 2023, as a result of which Russian ships and the port were damaged.
