Poland plans to open a missile defense base in the coming weeks
An anti-missile defense base will soon be opened in Redzikowo, north of Poland. It is part of NATO's integrated air and missile defense system.
Poland's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, shared it with PAP.
"In the coming weeks, we will open an anti-missile shield base in Redzikowo near Pak (Pomeranian Voivodeship). This is the base we agreed on with the United States," he said.
Sikorski emphasized he was negotiating "so that air defense missiles could also shoot down Russian missiles flying at Poland, not only Iranian missiles flying at the United States."
"Our opponents accused us of destroying the project of the base. Meanwhile, it already exists and will be solemnly opened soon," said the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Anti-missile defense base in Poland
Construction on the American missile defense base in Redzikowo began in 2016. It was planned to be commissioned in 2018, but the construction was delayed.
In the summer of 2021, the American military began installing anti-missile weapon systems on the base. SPY-1D (V) radar and fire control system (FCS) were already tested.
The conclusions of the NATO summit in July 2024 in Washington declared the missile base in Redzikowo operationally ready. This base is part of the US European Phased Adaptive Approach (EPAA), which is the US contribution to NATO's integrated air and missile defense system.
It is worth noting President Volodymyr Zelenskiy believes some neighboring countries, in particular Poland, could shoot down Russian missiles in western Ukraine.
During a recent visit to Kyiv, the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, stated NATO does not yet have a common opinion on the shooting down of Russian missiles using the Alliance countries over the territory of Ukraine, but they can reach an agreement on this matter.
According to the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces, during the massive Russian attack on Ukraine on August 26, one Russian drone flew into Poland from Chervonograd, Lviv Region. He was on the radar of the Polish air defense system for about half an hour. Today, the search for him continues in the Lublin Voivodeship of the country. Before that, during the missile attacks on Ukraine, the airspace of Poland was violated several times by Russian missiles.
