Russia experiences drone attack on Kaluga airport, explosions at Kirovske air base in occupied Crimea
In parts of Russia and the temporarily occupied Crimea, anti-aircraft defense systems were activated on the night of August 30 in response to a drone attack. It was reported that the Kaluga airport was targeted. Additionally, explosions were heard near the Kirovske airfield and the town of Dzhankoy in the occupied Crimea.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, Vladyslav Shapsha, the governor of the Kaluga region, and the Russian Telegram channels and the Telegram channel "Crimean Wind" reported this.
UAV attack in Russia
The defense department of the aggressor country released a statement this morning, claiming that their air defense systems destroyed 18 drones of unknown origin last night. As usual, the Russian side is blaming Ukraine for this attack.
Thus, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation claims that, in general, the following were liquidated:
- 11 drones – in Bryansk region,
- Four drones – in the Kaluga region,
- 2 UAVs – in occupied Crimea,
- and one more drone – in the Belgorod region.
As the Kaluga governor stated this morning, "4 UAVs were destroyed by air defense forces on the outskirts of Kaluga".
"Operational groups are working at the destruction sites," the Russian official added.
However, the Mash Telegram channel recently unveiled footage of a drone being shot down in the Kaluga region.
According to Russian media, two drones were downed near the international airport in Kaluga and two more in the surrounding area.
However, it has been reported that there is damage caused as a result of the drone attack.
"Preliminarily, there are no victims; there is destruction," the publication reads.
It's worth mentioning that based on the open data, a group of Ka-26 "Gazpromavia" helicopters is stationed near Grabtsevo, the international airport in Kaluga.
It should be noted that this region in Russia is not the first to be hit by drone strikes.
For instance, in May, a drone strike occurred at the "Pervyi Zavod" oil refinery in the Kaluga region, resulting in both a fire and an oil spill at the site.
For reference:
In the temporarily occupied Crimea, explosions were heard near the Kirovske airfield.
According to eyewitnesses, four explosions thundered over Kirovske:
- three in the airfield area,
- one above the local railway station.
One explosion was also heard in the Dzhankoy area.
It should be noted that Ukrainian kamikaze drones attacked the Russian airfield "Savasleyka" on August 16. Three Russian planes were destroyed there.
On the night of August 14, Russia was massively attacked by drones. Even though the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported on the so-called "destruction" of 117 drones in eight regions of the aggressor country, the so-called Russian military commanders wrote about three Russian airfields that were under attack.
Then, the air bases of Voronezh, Kursk, Savasleyka, and Borysoglebsk were attacked.
Last week, the Ukrainian Defense Forces dealt another blow to significant targets in the Russian Federation. Specifically, they struck the Russian airfield "Lypetsk," causing it to catch fire. This occurred earlier on in the week.
In addition, in early August, the Defense Forces eliminated Russain anti-aircraft missiles and fighters from the Morozovsk airfield. During this time, the General Staff verified the drone attack conducted by Ukraine's armed forces on the Morozovsk airfield near Rostov, resulting in damage to an ammunition warehouse.
