Neopalymi nationwide program helps Ukrainians with war-related burns, raises funds for the rehabilitation war prisoners

Ukraine's statewide Neopalymi rehabilitation program is treating over a hundred patients during the full-scale war.

What is the problem?

During the exchange on May 31, every person interviewed by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported torture. Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians are held in Russian captivity and return with injuries.

Burns and shrapnel wounds from the defense lines after missile attacks on Ukrainian cities are common among civilians. Scars cause physical and psychological discomfort.

The cost of full rehabilitation is also a problem, as the price may rise up to $15,000.

What is the solution?

The Neopalymi program provides free treatment for burns or scars. The project's patients have been victims of Russian captivity and massive shelling or are combatants. All of them go from restoring body functionality to regaining their aesthetic appearance.

How does it work?

A laser is used to burn the damaged area of skin, and drugs are injected into the scar to smooth it further from the inside.

Treatment of burns and scars can last from six months to several years. Although the scars do not disappear completely, thanks to technology, it is possible to remove most of the damage to the skin and, most importantly, to restore the function of the affected part of the body. The doctors who work with the center have created a unique protocol for treating deformity injuries. Until now, the lack of unified protocols has slowed down the rehabilitation process.

How does one acquire medical assistance?

To receive free treatment under the all-Ukrainian initiative, one needs to:

  • be a serviceman/ volunteer / civilian / child;
  • have skin injuries (burns or scars) as a result of military operations (the treatment itself begins only 4-6 months after the injury);
  • have a confirmation from the military medical commission about being wounded as a result of the war or a certificate from a doctor;
  • contact the Neopalymi team on Instagram or fill out the form here.

On August 9, the project organized a charity event in partnership with Ukraine's intelligence. The purpose of the event was to unite Ukrainian businessmen, spread information about the project among entrepreneurs, and involve them in helping.

The program cooperates with 32 clinics in Ukraine, Poland, and Moldova, which it provides with medicines and technical needs. The project involves professional specialists and a team of volunteers who communicate with future patients about their participation.

"After my daughter found out that we were going to remove traces of injuries from her face, she became different. She who was even afraid to look in the mirror now paints her lips.

The simplest thing is money. However, it can be converted into much more valuable and difficult things that we can give to others. These include time and sincerity. And even if this evening helps just one child, such events are necessary. If our children are to develop, grow, and learn, then such auctions are needed," says Zoya Lavrykova.
