Ukraine and Japan leaders sign bilateral security agreement

On June 13, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida signed a bilateral agreement on support for Ukraine and cooperation.
The Office of the President reports this.
Fumio Kishida, the head of the Japanese government, and Volodymyr Zelensky signed the document during their visit to Italy.
The Agreement on security fixes the main areas of long-term support from Japan in the field of:
- security and defense,
- humanitarian aid,
- recovery and reconstruction.
Considering Japan's constitutional restrictions, the document provides for the transfer of non-lethal equipment to Ukraine.
It also establishes the further development of cooperation within the capabilities coalitions of which Japan is a member. In particular, coalitions with:
- information technologies,
- demining.
Japan will provide support and cooperate in:
- the treatment of injured Ukrainian soldiers,
- efforts in the areas of intelligence and safeguarding of classified information,
- boosting protection and rebuilding of essential infrastructure,
- enhancing cybersecurity and information security,
- guaranteeing free navigation and safety of maritime routes.
In addition, Japanese partners will help with Ukraine's recovery and reconstruction by involving the private sector and Japanese government institutions. The countries will also study opportunities for developing Ukraine's industrial base.
Japan will also continue to support the Ukrainian peace formula and strengthen sanctions against Russia. It will also cooperate in developing a mechanism to reparate damages, mainly through sovereign Russian assets, and bring the aggressor to justice.
In addition, Japan will continue to help Ukraine strengthen nuclear security, particularly in protecting the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
It is worth adding that Japan will provide Ukraine with 4.5 billion US dollars this year and will continue to help throughout the ten-year agreement term. The total assistance from Japan from March 2022 will amount to more than 12 billion dollars.

It should be noted that the Japanese government recently handed over 101 vehicles to the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
It is worth adding that on June 13, the United States and Ukraine will sign a bilateral agreement on security guarantees on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy. The agreement with the USA will be Ukraine's 15th security agreement with its allies.
