Ukraine wins medal count at Para Biathlon World Championship with 20 awards
The Ukrainian Para Biathlon team claimed the top spot in the medal standings of the 2024 World Championships, securing 20 medals: eight gold, seven silver, and five bronze.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine said the tournament took place in Prince George, Canada, Rubryka reports.
The United States took second place with eight medals, and Canada clinched the third spot with seven medals.
"The World Championships in Canada hosted a team sprint for the first time. Liudmyla Liashenko and Bohdana Konashuk won the gold medal in the standing category. Taras Rad and Vasyl Kravchuk claimed the silver medal in the sitting category," the department said.
Para biathletes excelled the most in the standing class, winning nine medals, including four gold. Ukrainian athletes also won eight medals in the visually impaired category, including two golds and three more medals were secured in the sitting class, including two golds.
The most decorated para biathlete at this World Championships was Liudmyla Liashenko. She won four medals: three gold medals and one silver.
Liashenko became the world champion in sprint, individual races, and team events and took second place in sprint pursuit. She shared the title of the tournament's best athlete with German athlete Linn Kazmaier.
In related news, the Ukrainian Paralympic team finished the first stage of the Grand Prix in athletics in Dubai with 15 medals, including six gold.
