Zelensky signs new defense procurement transparency law

President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a passed Law No. 8381 on introducing transparency in defense procurement.

Rubryka reports, referring to the Ukrainian parliament's website, that, on March 21, the document was returned with the signature of the Head of State.

The publication ZN.ua reported on January 21 that the Ministry of Defense buys food for service members two to three times more expensive than in Kyiv stores.

The December agreement with Actyv Company was signed on behalf of the ministry by Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, who was involved in the case of embezzlement of $580,000 while purchasing military ammunition.

The information about "chicken eggs for 17 hryvnias" gained particular publicity. The investigation by journalists talked about the price per piece, although the price for 100 grams appeared in the document.

Deputy Defense Minister Viacheslav Shapovalov resigned and was fired on January 24 amid a scandal over overpriced purchases of military supplies. Bohdan Khmelnytskyi was also dismissed from the post of director of the procurement department of the Ministry of Defense, which became known on January 25.

After that, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal instructed to update the public procurement system for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which will provide for the publication of prices for products and goods.

Later, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine made public the updated contracts with food suppliers for the Ukrainian military.
