EU, US to keep supporting Ukraine "for as long as it takes"

US President Joe Biden and the head of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen made a joint statement on global issues, including russia's war in Ukraine.

Both leaders promised to support Ukraine in its further resistance to russia, the statement says.

"The United States and the European Union have taken a strong and united stand against russia's illegal, unjustifiable, and unprovoked war against Ukraine. We, along with a broad coalition of partners, have imposed swift and sweeping sanctions that are reducing russia's revenue to fund its war and its military-industrial base." the leaders stated.

They emphasized the need to reduce dependence on russian energy resources in order to strengthen the energy security of Europe and the world.

"We will also continue our close coordination to support Ukraine's energy security through its further integration into Europe's energy markets." the statement adds.

The United States and the European Union indicate that they jointly imposed "unprecedented, coordinated and effective sanctions and other economic measures" against russia. They undermine its ability to wage war and maintain its military-industrial complex.

"We are taking new steps together to target additional third-country actors across the globe to disrupt support for Russia's war from any corner of the world where it is identified." the leaders stressed.

The United States and European Union are working to ensure that Ukraine has the security, economic, and humanitarian support it needs for as long as it takes.

This includes supplying the Ukrainian Armed Forces with the military equipment and training it needs to defend itself from Russian aggression.

US President Joe Biden and the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, held a meeting at the White House on Friday against the backdrop of trade tensions and pressure caused by the war in Ukraine.
