King Charles meets Ukrainian refugees in Scotland

During a visit to the Scottish city of Aberdeen, the King of Great Britain, Charles III, met with Ukrainian refugees, the BBC reports.

A meeting was also held with the families of refugees from Syria and Afghanistan.

The publication noted that about a thousand Ukrainian refugees were settled in Aberdeen. They also emphasized that, at the same time, the city is ready to accept even more families.

At a reception in Town Hall, the King heard personal stories from families about their evacuation, arrival in Aberdeen, and some of the challenges they faced.

"We were greatly honored to share with King Charles III how we as a city have responded to devastating world events.

It was especially moving for the King to hear first-hand from some of those who have suffered directly as a result of conflict across the globe, those who have lost their homes, and more.

Thanks to the compassion and generosity of Aberdeen's organizations and residents, we have been able to extend the steadying and loving hand of friendship in welcoming them to our city," said Lord-Lieutenant Dr. David Cameron, who accompanied the King during his visit.

In August, now the former Minister of State for Refugees, Richard Harrington, said the government should double the aid to families who have taken in refugees from Ukraine.

"I've asked the Treasury for the second six months to increase the thank you payment from £350 [$400] to £700 [$800].

People are under pressure. I can't say with hard evidence, but all my gut tells me is that if they are in financial difficulty [the increased payment] will help a lot.

I can't say with conclusive evidence, but all my intuition tells me that if they're struggling financially, (the increased pay) will help a lot," the official said.

We will remind you that according to the UN Refugee Agency, after the beginning of russia's full-scale invasion, Ukrainians crossed the state border to leave more than 10 million times.

The coronation of Charles III will take place on June 3, 2023, in London, at a ceremony in Westminster Abbey.
