European Parliament is preparing an appeal to EU leaders to grant Ukraine candidate status

The leaders of the European Parliament are preparing an appeal to the leadership of the EU member states to grant Ukraine a candidate status at the June EU summit.

It was reported by Interfax-Ukraine, citing a draft document available to the agency.

The statement is planned to be approved at the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament meeting on Thursday, June 9.

"We must show courage, determination, and foresight in confronting the deteriorating international situation. Shifting geopolitical plates require action on our part. In doing so, we will be faithful to our principles and values. Ukrainians whose homeland is being brutally attacked, Moldovans, and Georgians who seek a bright future are waiting for a sign that their place is in the European family. It is why this Chamber urges you to grant Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, and Georgia EU candidate status under Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union and based on their merits," the draft statement reads.

A source familiar with the application process told the IF that minor changes could be made about Georgia.

As a reminder, President Zelensky said that Ukraine has de facto become part of the European Union.

Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba stated that Ukraine doesn't accept an alternative to EU membership candidate status.
