European Parliament recommends granting EU candidate status to Ukraine

The European Parliament approved with an absolute majority of votes a resolution urging EU member states to work to grant Ukraine candidate status.

This was reported by the European Pravda.

The resolution was approved by 637 votes, only 13 MEPs voted against the decision, 26 abstained.

"The resolution condemns Russia's war against Ukraine, calls on Russia to withdraw all its troops from Ukrainian territory, and calls on EU institutions to work to grant Ukraine EU candidate status," the statement said.

The European Parliament doesn't have the power to make any decisions in the process of candidate status and the process of joining the EU.

These decisions are entirely within the competence of the EU Member States.

The voice of the European Parliament is a recommendation.

For many years, the European Parliament has recommended granting Ukraine candidate status and starting accession talks.

Discussing the Russian invasion of Ukraine, MEPs voiced unwavering support for Ukraine and its efforts to join the European community.

As Rubryka reported, in his speech to the European Parliament on March 1, Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the European Union to provide Ukraine with all the necessary support and membership prospects.

Before Zelenskyy's speech, the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola said that the European Parliament recognizes the European perspective of Ukraine and would work to ensure that Ukraine receives the status of a candidate for membership.

On March 1, the European Union officially launched the procedure for considering Ukraine's application for membership.
