Timeline: day 5 of Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression
Today, March 1, and the sixth day of Russia's military attack on Ukraine. We're telling about all the current news. The article will be constantly updated.
What happened yesterday?
Yesterday, during the day, the aggressor's troops regrouped and accumulated armored vehicles and missile and artillery weapons in certain areas, primarily to surround and capture Kyiv and major cities of Ukraine, including Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Odesa, Kherson, and Mariupol. A significant part of military equipment comes from the territory of Belarus and through the occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Vasylkiv, and Bila Tserkva were shelled. There are casualties among the civilians.
Russia has already lost more than 5,700 troops in Ukraine. Kadyrov acknowledged their first dead and wounded fighters in Ukraine. More about losses here.
The first stage of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine took place in Gomel, but it is unknown what the politicians came to. Everyone is preparing for the second round of talks.
An emergency session of the UN General Assembly began in the evening in connection with the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
What today?
The hottest spots in Ukraine now are the north-western suburbs of Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Kherson. The passage of enemy vehicles is blocked on the north-western outskirts of Kyiv, artillery shelling in Kharkiv, and street fighting in Kherson. At about 10 pm, an air alarm rang throughout right-bank Ukraine. Occupants began firing at Zhytomyr and Kyiv at night.
Today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is recalling the ambassadors to Kyrgyzstan and Georgia for consultations because of unfriendly steps by these countries amid the Russian military invasion.
Zelenskyy called on the states of the world to declare Russia a terrorist state and also appoints a new head of territorial defense in Kyiv. General Mykola Zhernov is the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration.
The President of Ukraine stated that "if NATO is not ready to accept Ukraine, we need security guarantees." He also demanded that Ukraine hold further talks in Russia: an end to the bombing.
And in the evening another important statement: Ukraine is preparing an administrative document banning navigation in the territorial sea of Ukraine, as well as the entry into the seaports of Ukraine of ships with the flag of Russia or associated with Russia. It's time.
Ukraine's membership in the EU
Yesterday, Zelenskyy also signed an application for EU membership. So far, such an action is only commented on; eight countries are in favor, and there is a position of Germany, which said that this is a long procedure that can not be completed in a few months. But after our President's conversation with Olaf Scholz on Monday, Zelenskyy stated that work on Ukraine's accession to the EU should be accelerated.
Today, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó spoke in favor of Ukraine's accelerated accession to the European Union, which was supported by eight EU member states, which had previously also called for Ukraine's accession to the Union.
Zelensky gave a speech by video to the European Parliament. The President noted that Ukraine was paying too high a price for its freedom. Ukrainians are losing their best people, defenders, children. Deputies responded to the speech with unity, applauded standing.
At noon, it became known that Zelenskyy's application for Ukraine's membership in the EU had been registered, and the review procedure had begun.
In the evening, the European Parliament recommended granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership.

Yesterday it was reported that the occupiers are shelling the Chornobyl nuclear power plant to protect themselves from shelling by Ukrainians, as damage to the sarcophagus could be detrimental to residents of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, and Western Europe. But today Energoatom reports that Russian invaders are experiencing significant external and internal exposure in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
Explosions of gas pipelines are being prepared! The chairperson of the board of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine stated that saboteurs were spotted at almost all facilities, placing marks.

About financial aid, weapons, and volunteers
Recently, Romania, Italy, Turkey, Belgium, Japan, Norway, and Croatia decided to send military aid to Ukraine. Yesterday, Germany promised to start supplying weapons to Ukraine today. The EU will supply lethal weapons to Ukraine for the first time. A foreign legion of volunteers has been formed to go to war in Ukraine, in particular from Croatia. There have been reports in the media that the Finnish government intends to help Ukraine with lethal weapons.
Today it became known that the Norwegian government will send weapons to Ukraine, 2,000 anti-tank grenade launchers. This decision cancels the policy of Norway, which has been in force since the 1950s!

SWIFT blocking and international community reaction
The UN International Court of Justice has set a date for the first trial against Russia. The first hearing is scheduled for March 7 and 8.
Yesterday, 32 countries of the world closed the sky for Russian planes, and Russia also closed the sky for 36 countries in response. Kyiv and region
08:43 – In the Kyiv region in the village of Buzova, the shell of the occupiers hit the maternity hospital.
In Brovary in the morning, they began to prepare the city for defense. Mayor Sapozhko asked the townspeople not to take photos of what was happening so as not to help the enemy.
17:05 – in Borodianka, in the Buchansk district, residential houses were destroyed from a series of airstrikes.
17:15 – The Russian military fired on a TV tower in Kyiv.
23:13 – Kyiv districts of Rusanivka, Vyshneve, Kurenivka Boiarka, and Zhuliany are being bombed. The TV channels stopped broadcasting for a short time, but everything resumed very quickly. Unfortunately, four people were burned alive at the scene, immediately found by the SES, and two more corpses and many victims are likely to be found. Firefighters are working on the scene.
Chernihiv region
The head of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration said in the morning that the city of Chernihiv was mined on exists!
Around 11:00, Lukashenko stated that Belarus has no plans to take part in Russia's war against Ukraine. Immediately after that, Belarusian troops entered the Chernihiv region. The information was confirmed to the Suspilne by Vitalii Kyrylov, spokesperson for the North Territorial Defense Forces.
Kharkiv
The shelling in Kharkiv doesn't stop.
09:01 – Russian occupation forces fired on the center of Kharkiv, in particular, a large explosion occurred in Svobody Square near the building of the Regional State Administration, details here.
- In the afternoon, it became known that at least 10 people were killed, more than 20 were injured, and 10 people were rescued from the rubble as a result of a cruise missile strike on the central square in Kharkiv.
- The SES continues to remove the bodies of dead and wounded people from the rubble of the buildings destroyed by artillery shelling. There are already at least 6 dead.
13:11 – The occupiers purposefully blow up electrical substations. The city is disconnected from electricity, heat, and water supply.
16:00 – A missile strike was launched on a residential district, said Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov. The hospital was destroyed, there are dead and wounded. The Ukrainian side states that a Russian plane bombing the city has already been shot down.
Kherson
Occupation equipment is moving through Kherson again. And immediately the Russians fired on residential buildings. There is a video on the Telegram channel of Rubryka.
16:00 – The Russians broke through to the center of Kherson. But half of the city is still controlled by Ukraine. Directly behind Kherson, the Armed Forces created a strong frontier, so it will be difficult for the Russians to advance to Mykolayiv.
17:12 – In Kherson, the Russian military fired at rescuers.
Mykolaiv
20:07 – The occupiers covered the city of Bashtanka (Mykolaiv region) with Grad. The strikes hit the city center and destroyed its infrastructure. Photos of mass destruction are here.
Donetsk and Luhansk region
The invaders have been leveling Volnovakha for five days now: the evacuation of the population continues.
17:53 – Mariupol is under a barrage of Russian rocket artillery. The occupiers are striking at all areas of the city. The shelling does not stop… According to operative information, 21 wounded are already known. It is unknown at this time how many people died, "said Pavlo Kyrylenko, head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration.
- According to preliminary data, one person was killed and three were injured. Police officers worked on the spot.
- Several houses and school 16 were destroyed. In addition, the residential sector of the Left Bank district, as well as the territory of Kommunalnyk Municipal Enterprise, came under fire again.
- At about 5:30 p.m., a new shelling of the city began. The number of victims is being clarified.
- The police opened a criminal case under Art. 438 (violation of the laws and customs of war) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
In the evening Iryna Vereshchuk reported on the state of affairs in Luhansk and Donetsk regions:
- Volnovakha, Severodonetsk, and other cities of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions were under devastating enemy fire.
- People are left without water, electricity, and food. This is a humanitarian catastrophe.
- The occupiers do not provide humanitarian corridors, violating international humanitarian norms.
