Japan to impose sanctions against Putin

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that Tokyo will join the United States, Great Britain, Europe and Canada in blocking the access of some Russian banks to the SWIFT international payment system.

This is reported by Japan Times.

As noted, Japan will allocate $100 million to Ukraine for emergency humanitarian assistance.

Kishida said that Japan will also impose sanctions on high-ranking Russian officials, in particular, Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi is due to discuss this topic with colleagues from the G7 countries later on Sunday.

Kishida's decision to join SWIFT sanctions came after Japan unveiled a series of tougher sanctions against Russia last week, including freezing assets owned by three Russian banks and controlling exports of high-tech products such as semiconductors.

It should be recalled that on the night of February 27, the leaders of the European Commission, France, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Canada and the United States announced a powerful new set of economic sanctions, including disconnecting individual banks from the SWIFT payment system and banning the sale of "golden passports" to wealthy Russians.
