Ukrainian Lyniv became the chief conductor of Italian Opera House
Ukrainian Oksana Lyniv became the chief conductor of the Municipal Theater of Bologna. Her work will begin on January 22 and will last for three years.
This was reported by The Guardian.
"I never imagined that I would be the first woman to become a principal conductor at the Italian Opera House. It's an honor for me, and I'm very happy to be a part of this turning point in history," says Lyniv.
Lyniv has already worked as a chief conductor at the Graz Opera House (Austria). She also became the first woman to conduct a music festival in Bayreuth, Germany, in its 125-year history.
Oksana Lyniv was born in Brody in a family of musicians. She studied at the Lysenko Music School in Lviv. Lyniv conducted her first orchestra at the age of 16. She is now 43 years old.
Ukrainian emphasizes that it's not so easy to make a career as a conductor because men are usually elected to this position.
"I didn't have a woman acquaintance who became a conductor and could help me with advice. But now the situation is changing; more and more women are appearing in orchestras. Working conditions have become much better as society begins to think more about equal rights. Young women who want to become conductors should not give up, they should seize every opportunity," says Lyniv.
